
When many of us pull or strain a muscle, the “quick fix” is to numb the pain, ice any swelling, and ease symptoms with over-the-counter medicine if necessary. The same is often true when we catch a cold—we usually try to relieve symptoms with nasal decongestants, cough suppressants, and fever reducers. However, many of the symptoms that come along with an injury, irritant, or illness are part of the body’s natural attempts at self-healing and protecting itself. For instance, inflammation at the site of an injury is part of the body’s healing process and necessary for repair. However, when poor diet, stress, toxins or another issue causes inflammation to become chronic, inflammation can also contribute to serious illnesses like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Usually, the body is quite capable of self-healing.
