What do trained athletes and people with a longer lifespan have in common? Longer telomeres. Telomeres are cellular structures that scientists use to determine cell age. Studies have found that exercise, in all groups of people, leads to a delay in telomere decomposition. Longer telomeres seem to be a good indication of cell health and age. Shorter telomeres seem to be an indication of a shorter lifespan as well as a marker for chronic ailments and diseases that cause a shorter life. The good news is that even if it has been a while since you last hit the gym, it’s not too late. The study found that even damaged telomeres can benefit from exercise and reverse the damage.
