Insomnia

Published October 26, 2015

The ability to fall asleep and to stay asleep during the course of the night is one of nature’s most restorative gifts. But too many people struggle to get enough sleep, or enough good-quality sleep. Hectic lifestyles, staying up too late, and engaging in too much screen-time can be culprits. But so can your hormones.

As individuals age, hormone levels naturally fall off. In men, the primary hormone is testosterone, and in women, estrogen and testosterone fall off.  Declining hormone levels can disrupt sleep, and too little sleep can disrupt your hormones’ ability to regulate the body, creating a circular cause and effect relationship.

A specially-trained doctor will administer tests to evaluate your hormone levels and may suggest bioidentical hormone replacement therapy to help balance the body and restore the ability to sleep deeply and soundly throughout the night.

Bioidentical hormones are exact replicas of the hormones your body produces naturally; their chemical structure is the same, so the body “reads” and reacts to these chemicals in the same way it would react to naturally produced hormones. Synthetic hormones, on the other hand, are not chemically exact replicas – their chemical structure is slightly altered.

Bioidentical hormones are made in compounding pharmacies, which are state-of-the-art laboratories that employ pharmacists and other trained technicians to formulate and produce bioidentical hormones specifically for each individual patient. The compounding pharmacist uses plant compounds to produce customized formulations that are chemically identical to naturally-occurring hormones.

Each individual patient has different needs, and different levels of various hormones may be required to alleviate insomnia or other symptoms of declining hormones. Unlike synthetic hormones, mass-produced in large-scale factories, with a one-dosage-fits-all approach, compounded bioidentical hormones can be tailored to each individual patient’s needs.

Contact Dr. Rehman today to learn whether bioidentical hormone replacement therapy may be a solution for your insomnia and sleeplessness. She is a Board Certified Doctor of Osteopathy (D. O.), and has extensive additional training in evaluating and balancing hormone levels in men and women
