Loss of Libido

Published October 26, 2015

A decrease in the sex drive, or “loss of libido” is understood to be a part of the aging process. Fundamentally tied to hormone levels in the body, as specific hormones such as testosterone and estrogen fall off, a natural decline in the sex drive is predictable. But with men and women living far into their later years, some measure of replacement of essential hormones may be beneficial, not just to restore the sex drive, but to keep the body in balance and help slow down the aging process.

Bioidentical hormone replacement may be the solution. Bioidentical hormones are exact replicas of the hormones your body produces naturally; their chemical structure is the same, so the body “reads” and reacts to these chemicals in the same way it would react to naturally produced hormones. Synthetic hormones, on the other hand, are not chemically exact replicas – their chemical structure is slightly altered.

Bioidentical hormones are made in compounding pharmacies, which are state-of-the-art laboratories that employ pharmacists and other trained technicians to formulate and produce bioidentical hormones specifically for each individual patient. The compounding pharmacist uses plant compounds to produce customized formulations that are chemically identical to naturally-occurring hormones.

Each individual patient has different needs, and different levels of various hormones may be required to restore a measure of the sex drive. Unlike synthetic hormones, mass-produced in large-scale factories, with a one-dosage-fits-all approach, compounded bioidentical hormones can be tailored to each individual patient’s needs.

Contact Dr. Rehman today to learn whether bioidentical hormone replacement therapy may be a solution for you. She is a Board Certified Doctor of Osteopathy (D. O.), and has extensive additional training in evaluating and balancing hormone levels in men and women
