BMI, or body mass index, is a calculation based on height and weight that is commonly used to determine whether a person is underweight, overweight, or obese. While the BMI calculation is simple and useful in some ways, there are much more accurate ways to determine whether or not someone has a healthy body composition. People who have a lot of muscle, for instance, may show up on a BMI scale as overweight when in fact they may be healthier than a person who shows up on a BMI scale as “normal” but has a high percentage of body fat. Obesity is a serious disease that can interfere with daily life. For an obese person, going up a flight of stairs may seem daunting. Obese people often begin to move less and eat more, eventually making them increasingly vulnerable to disease, including diabetes and cancer.
