Adrenal Fatigue

Published June 18, 2015

Two small glands sit on top of the kidneys and are known as the adrenal glands. One function of these glands is to produce Cortisol – a hormone that is secreted to help individuals handle stress of any type – psychological, physical, emotional, etc. Over time, with on-going stress and the aging process, it is thought that these glands may become fatigued, and are no longer capable of producing the quantities of Cortisol needed to help the body cope.

Symptoms of adrenal fatigue can include:

  • Chronic tiredness that is not relieved by sleep
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Difficulty making decisions
  • A general feeling of lethargy or apathy
  • Feelings of depression or anxiety
  • Generally feeling overwhelmed

The best diagnosis for this condition is the urine sample test. The sample is analyzed, and patterns of Cortisol levels in the individual are then compared to typical Cortisol level patterns. Using this information, a specially-trained doctor can determine if the adrenals are producing enough Cortisol.

Once the determination is made, the doctor and patient work closely together.  A customized dietary plan may be developed to help stabilize blood sugar and increase energy. Lifestyle choices may need adjustment to help improve sleep and increase the healthy function of the adrenal glands.  Pharmaceutical-grade supplements may also be prescribed, to address any nutritional deficiencies and further support the function of the adrenal glands.

Bioidentical Cortisol may also be prescribed for a period of time, to supplement the amount produced by the individual’s body. Bioidentical hormones are chemically exact replicas of the hormones naturally produced by the body. The body then “reads” the chemical and responds to it in the same way it would respond to naturally-produced hormones. This is different than synthetic hormones, which are not exact replicas, but rather are slightly altered chemically.

It is important to consult with a Board Certified doctor who has additional training in the diagnosis and treatment of insidious and chronic conditions like adrenal fatigue. Dr. Rehman is a Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) and has had extensive additional training in evaluating and balancing hormones in men and women.
