Low Thyroid

Published December 1, 2014

Hypothyroidism, or low levels of the thyroid hormone, can affect the entire body. Sometimes the changes occur slowly over time, so individuals are not aware of the condition until it becomes more severe. Some of the symptoms associated with low levels of the thyroid hormone are also associated with aging; in fact, the condition is more prevalent in older people, especially women over 60.

Some of the symptoms associated with this condition are:

  • Tiredness/weakness/lethargy
  • Feeling cold or the inability to tolerate cold
  • Dry skin and brittle nails
  • Coarse or thinning hair
  • Memory problems or difficulty concentrating
  • Depression
  • Constipation
  • Heavy or irregular menstrual periods

Since many of these symptoms can also be tied to other conditions, the best diagnostic tool is a blood test administered by a qualified physician. If levels are found to be low, supplementation with bioidentical hormones may be indicated.

Bioidentical hormones are exact replicas of the hormones the body produces naturally; their chemical structure is the same, so the body “reads” and reacts to these chemicals in the same way it would react to naturally produced hormones. Synthetic hormones, on the other hand, are not chemically exact replicas – their chemical structure is slightly altered.

Bioidentical hormones are made in compounding pharmacies, which are state-of-the-art laboratories that employ pharmacists and other trained technicians to formulate and produce bioidentical hormones specifically for each individual patient.  Unlike synthetic hormones, mass-produced in large-scale factories, with a one-dosage-fits-all approach, compounded bioidentical hormones can be tailored to each individual patient’s needs.
