Allergies and Food Sensitivities

Published October 14, 2014

The immune system is a double edged sword. It should react against harmful invaders such as bacteria and germs, but sometimes, exposure to common foods or food additives may trigger chronic activation of the immune system.

It is estimated that one in three Americans suffers from a gluten intolerance, and the effects can be myriad. But other food sensitivities may activate the immune system as well, and often, because the effects are delayed for hours, we don’t associate the problem we’re experiencing with something we ate.

Food sensitivities can cause:

  • Chronic arthritis, debilitating joint and muscle pain, chronic tendonitis
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Gastrointestinal problems and bowel irritation
  • Weight gain and/or the inability to lose weight
  • Eczema, Psoriasis, acne, rashes and other skin irritations and conditions
  • Migraines and frequent headaches
  • ADD/ADHD

Food allergies and sensitivities have been shown to create damage in every cell of the body.  Over 140 auto-immune diseases are associated with gluten intolerance alone.

Specialized testing is needed to determine each individual’s unique sensitivities.  The ALCAT is the state-of-the-art test to determine the body’s immune system response to over 300 foods and food products. A blood test is conducted that measures the body’s cellular response to a wide array of substances including foods, additives, colorings, chemicals, functional foods and medicinal herbs. Cellular reactivity after exposure of the blood to the various test agents, versus the patient’s own baseline control, tells the doctor which substances may be causing a sensitivity-related response in the body.

Dr. Rehman at Life Enhancement Centre provides this testing, and can use the information as the foundation of an overall program to help you eliminate the root cause of your chronic symptoms. She is a Board Certified Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.), and has additional extensive training in correcting nutritional imbalances.
